How To Keep Windows Up To Date

Since Windows 98, Microsoft has allowed us to update our operating system via a Web Based Update Wizard. After you sign on to the internet, this Update Wizard will connect to Microsoft's update server and will then scan your computer for old drivers and system files. If there are newer versions available, the Update Wizard will display a list of updates available for download. Such files could be critical system updates, multimedia enhancements, Internet Explorer patches and various updates etc. Therefore, this technical brief will show you how to update your computer system via the Web Based Update Wizard.

  6. Then click on the Windows Update icon located at the top of the Start Menu.
  7. This will take you directly to The Microsoft Windows Update Page.
  8. Windows will then perform a brief scan in the background for the currently available updates.
  9. It will then give you two options to choose from and click on: Express and Custom.
  10. Novice users and those who want just the critical updates would click on the Express option.
  11. More advance users can choose and click on the Custom option.
  12. The Custom option lets you select additional updates such as hardware drivers for your system.
  13. If the Express option is clicked on, Windows will display all available updates for your review.
  14. These available critical updates will be already selected and checked for you in a list format.
  15. As these updates are all critical in nature, you would now click on the Install Updates button.
  16. However, if you do not want to upgrade to Internet Explore 7, you would uncheck this update here.
  17. After clicking on the Install Updates button, Windows will ask you to accept the License Agreement.
  18. After accepting the License Agreement, Windows will begin installing all selected critical updates.
  19. For those who clicked the Custom option instead, the critical updates will also be selected for you.
  20. However, you can also choose optional Software and Hardware updates from a menu on the left.
  21. Simply click on each optional category such as Software (Optional) to view its listing of updates.
  22. Then use your mouse to click on and select any available optional updates that you want to install.
  23. And when you are finished, click on the Review and install updates link at the top of the page.
  24. Then click on the Install Now button at the top of the page to begin installing the updates.
  25. Windows may ask you to accept their License Agreement and if so select YES with your mouse.
  26. Your updates will begin downloading and Windows will automatically install them for you.
  27. Then Windows will usually prompt you to reboot you computer, which you should do.
  28. And that's all there is to it and please do it often as these updates are always coming out.
