How To Export Your Outlook Express Address Book

If you use Outlook Express as your default E-Mail program, your contacts are usually stored in the Outlook Address Book. And depending on how you configured Outlook Express, every time you reply to an incoming mail, that person's E-Mail address is automatically added to your Address Book. As ones Address book is extremely valuable, I thought I would compile a technical brief to show you how to export this Address Book to a floppy disk or thumb drive so that you can import it to another system, such as your Notebook.

Exporting Your Outlook Express Address Book

  1. Begin by placing a blank floppy disk into your floppy disk drive.
  2. Then launch Outlook Express in the manner you normally do until it opens.
  3. Now click on the word File, which is contained in your top tool bar area.
  4. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Export.
  5. Then within the Export Menu, click on the word: Address Book.
  6. Now highlight Text File (Comma Separated Values) and click on the Export button.
  7. For a Floppy Disk, type A:\Address.csv into the Save exported file as: input box and click on Next.
  8. For a Thumb Drive, type E:\Address.csv into the Save exported file as: input box and click on Next.
  9. This will ensure that your Address Book gets saved to the media you selected.
  10. Now Select the fields you wish to export by placing check marks next to those fields.
  11. Then click on the Finish button at the bottom of the screen to Export your Address Book.
  12. Windows will inform you that the Address book export process has successfully completed.
  13. Now click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen to exit this notification Window.
  14. And then click on the Close button to exit the Address Book Export Tool Window.
  15. Now save your floppy or thumb drive in a secure place in case you need to import it in the future.

Importing Your Outlook Express Address Book

  1. As a demonstration, we will import the Address Book that was saved to a floppy or thumb drive.
  2. Therefore, insert the floppy disk or thumb drive containing your Address Book into your computer.
  3. This can be a different computer such as your notebook if you want to import it elsewhere.
  4. Then launch Outlook Express on whatever Computer you are importing to until it opens.
  5. Now click on the word File, which is contained in your top tool bar area.
  6. This will pull down a menu for you to now click on Import.
  7. Then within the Import Menu, click on the word: Other Address Book.
  8. Now highlight Text File (Comma Separated Values) and click on the Import button.
  9. Type A:\Address.csv into the Choose a file to import: box and click on Next.
  10. For a Thumb Drive, Type E:\Address.csv into the Choose a file to import: box and click on Next.
  11. Note: If you saved your export file elsewhere on your drive then you would browse to it.
  12. Now Select the fields you wish to import by placing check marks next to those fields.
  13. Then click on the Finish button at the bottom of the screen to Import your Address Book.
  14. Windows will inform you that the Address book import process has successfully completed.
  15. Now click on the OK button at the bottom of the screen to exit this notification Window.
  16. And then click on the Close button to exit the Address Book Import Tool Window.
