Executable File - Definition

An Executable File is a file in a format that the computer can directly execute so it can be used to perform various functions or operations on a computer. Unlike data files, Executable Files cannot be read by humans because these files have been passed through a compiler or assembler. On a Microsoft Windows compatible computer, common Executable Files are in the .BAT, .COM, .EXE, and .BIN format. Depending on the operating system and its setup, there can also be several other types of executable files.
